Chapter 75 - THE AWARD

The city honored Emma with a humanitarian award.

She hated the idea.

“I don't want a stage.”

“You've earned it,” Lorenzo said.

“I'd rather be at Maple House.”

“You'll be back there tomorrow.”

On the night of the ceremony, Emma stood behind the curtain surrounded by politicians, doctors, business leaders, and community activists.

When her name was announced, the audience rose.

Emma walked to the stage.

The applause was deafening.

She stared at the crowd.

Then she looked at Lorenzo.

He smiled.

Emma took the microphone.

“I don't know what to say.”

Someone shouted,

“Tell the truth!”

She laughed.

“Fine.”

She looked around.

“I don't deserve this award alone.”

The room became quiet.

“I have received more help than I have ever given.”

She told them about being a waitress.

About being invisible.

About Elena.

About one small decision.

“I was never the strongest person in that room.”

She paused.

“I was simply the first person willing to stop and care.”

The audience stood again.

Emma shook her head.

“Don't applaud me.”

The room quieted.

“Look around you.”

She pointed toward the audience.

“Someone near you is struggling.”

“Someone is frightened.”

“Someone thinks nobody sees them.”

“Be the person who notices.”

When she stepped away from the microphone, Lorenzo was waiting.

He whispered,

“That was very Elena of you.”

Emma smiled.

May you like

“I learned from the best.”
