Chapter 53 - THE TRUTH ABOUT AVA

Ethan was safe.
But Ava's situation was more complicated.
The relative she had escaped from had legal custody.
Emma's legal team began working immediately.
During the process, Ava finally revealed why she had run.
She had discovered that her brother was being neglected while their guardian spent most nights gambling.
“She told us nobody would believe us.”
Emma looked at her.
“I believe you.”
Ava started crying.
“Why?”
“Because you protected your brother when you were terrified.”
“That doesn't prove everything.”
“No.”
Emma reached across the table.
“But it proves something about who you are.”
The custody hearing was difficult.
The relative denied everything.
But records, school reports, medical documentation, and witness statements told another story.
The judge granted temporary protective custody.
Ava and Ethan were moved into a foundation-supported home.
When the decision was announced, Ava covered her face and cried.
Emma hugged her.
“You're safe.”
Ava whispered,
“I don't know how to thank you.”
Emma smiled.
“Raise your brother well.”
Ava laughed through her tears.
“I can do that.”
May you like
“Then you've already thanked me.”
