Chapter 11 - THE PRICE OF FREEDOM

For the first time in years, Elena woke without fear.
Senator Whitmore was awaiting trial, his political empire collapsing by the hour. Newspapers called the ballroom scandal a turning point, but Elena knew the truth.
Emma had been the turning point.
“You changed everything,” Elena told her over breakfast.
Emma smiled. “I only told someone to be kind.”
“That is why you are dangerous to cruel people.”
Across the table, Lorenzo watched quietly.
Emma caught his stare.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You've been staring for five minutes.”
“I was thinking.”
“About?”
“How easily you became part of this family.”
Emma’s smile faded.
“I don't know whether I belong here.”
Lorenzo stood.
“You do.”
The certainty in his voice made her heart ache.
Later, Daniel arrived with unexpected news.
“The senator has refused to cooperate,” he said. “He claims there is someone more powerful behind the operation.”
Lorenzo’s expression hardened.
“Who?”
Daniel placed a photograph on the table.
Everyone stared.
It showed a man Emma had never seen before.
A man Elena recognized immediately.
Her face went pale.
“That's Lorenzo's uncle.”

It was already inside.
