Chapter 31 - THE LETTER IN ELENA’S DESK

Three years after Elena’s passing, Emma was sorting through old documents at the foundation when she found a small envelope hidden beneath a stack of photographs.
Her name was written across it in Elena’s unmistakable handwriting.
Emma stared at it for a long moment before opening it.
“My dear Emma,
If you are reading this, then I am no longer there to tell you something I should have said many times.
The night you defended me, you thought you were simply helping an old woman who had been humiliated.
You were wrong.
You gave me back my dignity.
You gave Lorenzo back his mother.
And most importantly, you reminded my son that power without compassion is simply another form of emptiness.
Never forget what you did that night.
Not because it made you important.
Because it proved you already were.
Love always,
Elena”
Emma pressed the letter against her chest, tears filling her eyes.
Lorenzo found her minutes later.
“What happened?”
She handed him the letter.
He read it silently.
Then he smiled.
“She always knew you better than I did.”
Emma laughed softly.
“She was your mother.”
“She was right about you.”
He wrapped an arm around her.
“About what?”
“That you were never ordinary.”
Emma leaned against him.
“I still think I was.”
Lorenzo kissed her temple.
May you like
“And that,” he whispered, “is exactly why she loved you.”
