Chapter 38 - THE PROMISE

That night, Emma and Lorenzo returned to the balcony where they had once stood in silence after everything fell apart.
Chicago glittered below.
Lorenzo looked at her.
“I have one regret.”
Emma frowned.
“What?”
“That I didn't find you sooner.”
Emma smiled.
“Then we wouldn't have the life we have.”
He took both her hands.
“I made you a promise years ago.”
“I remember.”
“I promised I would spend the rest of my life protecting your peace.”
Emma's eyes softened.
“You kept it.”
“I intend to keep it tomorrow too.”
She laughed.
“That's a very long-term contract.”
He leaned closer.
“I'm prepared to negotiate.”
She kissed him.
For a moment, the city disappeared.
There were no empires.
No enemies.
No fear.
Only two people who had survived everything together.
May you like
And a promise that still felt new.
