Chapter 42 - THE EMPTY CHAIR

Mara survived the surgery.

But recovery would take months.

Her daughter, Lily, had nowhere to go.

Emma brought her to the foundation's emergency family residence.

Lily barely spoke.

She sat at the dining table every evening staring at the empty chair beside her.

“That was Mommy's chair,” she finally said.

Emma sat beside her.

“I know.”

“Are you going to leave too?”

Emma's heart broke.

“No.”

“Everyone leaves.”

Emma looked at the little girl.

“Not everyone.”

Lily studied her face.

“Promise?”

Emma held out her smallest finger.

“I promise I'll be here tomorrow.”

Lily wrapped her finger around Emma's.

“And the day after?”

“And the day after.”

Lorenzo watched from the doorway.

He had spent years learning that wealth could solve practical problems.

But it couldn't heal a frightened child's heart.

Only consistency could do that.

That night, Lily finally slept without waking up crying.

Emma checked on her twice.

The third time, Lorenzo caught her in the hallway.

“You're already attached.”

Emma smiled faintly.

“She needs someone.”

He kissed her forehead.

“So did my mother.”

Emma looked at him.

“And you needed someone too.”

Lorenzo nodded.

“I know.”

Neither of them said what they were thinking.
