Chapter 12 - THE UNCLE

His name was Vittorio Moretti.

He had disappeared from Chicago fifteen years earlier after a brutal dispute with Lorenzo’s father.

According to Elena, Vittorio believed the Moretti empire should have belonged to him.

“He always wanted power,” she whispered.

Lorenzo studied the photograph.

“He wants more than power now.”

Daniel nodded.

“The senator was just a front. Vittorio financed the campaign and used political connections to expand his influence.”

Emma looked at Lorenzo.

“Why would he return now?”

“Because my father is dead.”

Silence filled the room.

Lorenzo rarely spoke about his father.

“Elena,” he continued, “where did you get that photograph?”

She hesitated.

“A man left it outside my room.”

“When?”

“Three days ago.”

Lorenzo immediately stood.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I hoped I was wrong.”

His jaw tightened.

Emma touched Elena’s shoulder.

“We'll figure this out.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“You don't have to.”

“I know.”

“But I'm staying.”

For once, Lorenzo didn't argue.

He simply took her hand.

Outside the mansion gates, an unseen camera captured the moment.

Vittorio received the photograph minutes later.

His smile was cold.

“So,” he murmured, “the waitress has become family.”

He tore the photograph in half.

“Then she has become useful.”
