Chapter 71 - THE HOUSE ON MAPLE STREET
The next chapter of the foundation began with an old house.
It stood on Maple Street, three blocks from the original center.
The building had been abandoned for years.
Windows were cracked.
The garden was overgrown.
The roof leaked whenever it rained.
Most people saw a ruined property.
Emma saw something else.
“A home,” she said.
Lorenzo looked at her.
“You want to buy it?”
“I already did.”
He laughed.
“You bought a building without telling me?”
Emma smiled.
“You've survived worse decisions.”
Together, they began transforming the house.
The first floor became a family counseling center.
The second floor became temporary apartments for women and children.
The attic became a small library.
The garden became a playground.
When the renovation was finally completed, Emma stood at the entrance holding a key.
Ava stood beside her.
Mara brought the first family to move in.
A mother named Grace walked through the doorway carrying her sleeping daughter.
She stopped in the living room.
“This is really ours?”
Emma smiled.
“For as long as you need it.”
Grace began crying.
Her daughter woke up.
“Mommy?”
Grace hugged her tightly.
“We're safe.”
Emma stepped outside.
Lorenzo joined her.
“You knew this would happen.”
“What?”
“You'd keep finding houses.”
Emma smiled.
“Maybe.”
He kissed her forehead.
“One foundation wasn't enough.”
“No.”
She looked at the warm windows glowing behind them.
