Chapter 67 - THE CHILD WHO ASKED

Matteo's daughter, Sofia, arrived in Chicago that summer.

She was nineteen.

Curious.

Intelligent.

And fascinated by the family story she had only recently learned.

She sat with Emma one afternoon.

“Did my grandmother really save this place?”

Emma smiled.

“She didn't save this place.”

“What did she do?”

“She taught us why it mattered.”

Sofia looked around the foundation.

“Was she powerful?”

Emma thought for a moment.

“Yes.”

“Rich?”

“Yes.”

“Scary?”

Emma laughed.

“Very.”

Sofia smiled.

“But kind?”

Emma looked toward Elena's portrait.

“When it mattered most.”

Sofia nodded.

“I wish I'd known her.”

Emma placed a hand over hers.

“You know her.”

“How?”

“Every time you choose kindness when cruelty would be easier.”

Sofia looked at the portrait.

Then she smiled.

“I think I understand.”
