Chapter 8 - THE ATTACK

The attack came three nights later.
A gunshot shattered the mansion windows.
I grabbed Noah and dropped to the floor.
Guards rushed through the hallway.
Lorenzo appeared instantly.
“Stay here!”
Another shot exploded against the wall.
Noah cried.
I pulled him against my chest.
“It's okay. I'm here.”
Lorenzo crouched beside us.
His expression was no longer gentle.
It was deadly.
“Take them downstairs.”
“I’m not leaving you.”
“You're not arguing with me.”
“I am tonight.”
For one second, he stared at me.
Then he almost smiled.
“Fine. Stay behind me.”
He moved us through the corridor as security returned fire outside.
My heart pounded.
When we reached the basement, Elena was already there.
She was calm.
Too calm.
“Where is my son?”
“Protecting us.”
She nodded.
“He always does.”
Then we heard footsteps.
Not guards.
Someone had entered the house.
Lorenzo appeared at the top of the stairs.
His shirt was torn, blood streaking one sleeve.
But he was standing.
“It's over,” he said.
Noah ran to him.
May you like
Lorenzo caught him carefully.
And I realized that the most dangerous man in Chicago had become something completely different around the people he loved.
