Chapter 40 - THE LIGHT NEVER LEFT

Emma returned to the ballroom one final time.
The same chandelier still hung overhead.
The marble floor still reflected the light.
But the room no longer felt frightening.
It felt peaceful.
She closed her eyes.
She could almost hear Elena laughing.
Almost hear Noah arguing.
Almost hear Lorenzo's footsteps behind her.
Then she opened her eyes.
Lorenzo was standing there.
“You came without me again.”
Emma smiled.
“You always find me.”
“I always will.”
He walked toward her and took her hand.
They stood beneath the chandelier.
Years ago, Emma had entered this room exhausted, frightened, and invisible.
Now she stood there as a wife, a mother, a leader, a woman who had helped thousands of people rebuild their lives.
But deep down, she was still the same woman.
The woman who had looked at someone hurting and refused to walk away.
Emma squeezed Lorenzo's hand.
“Do you think Elena would be proud?”
He looked at her.
“I know she would.”
Outside, Chicago glittered through the windows.
The city kept moving.
Time kept moving.
Life kept moving.
And the memory of Elena continued moving with them.
Not as a tragedy.
Not as an ending.
But as a light passed from one heart to another.
One small choice.
One trembling hand.
May you like
One act of courage.
And a family that would carry that kindness into every generation still to come.
