Chapter 25 - THE PROMISE

Back in Chicago, Lorenzo made a decision.
He would step away from the last remaining criminal operations connected to his father's empire.
His advisers protested.
Some threatened to leave.
Others warned him that enemies would see weakness.
Lorenzo remained calm.
“My family is my priority.”
Emma stood beside him.
“What happens next?”
“I don't know.”
He smiled.
“But I know where I'm going.”
The transition was difficult.
Several competitors tried to exploit the situation.
Lorenzo refused to retaliate unless absolutely necessary.
Instead, he built legitimate businesses, expanded the foundation, and invested in hospitals and community programs.
One evening, Emma asked him if he regretted giving up power.
“Sometimes.”
She looked surprised.
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because power was easy.”
He took her hand.
“Peace is harder.”
Emma leaned against him.
“But better?”
“The best thing I've ever had.”
He kissed her forehead.
“I made you a promise when we married.”
“Which one?”
“That you would never have to wonder whether you were safe or loved.”
May you like
He smiled.
“I intend to keep it until my last breath.”
