Chapter 4 - THE FIRST WARNING

The next morning, a black SUV waited outside my apartment.
I opened the door and immediately froze.
Lorenzo leaned against the vehicle.
“You followed me?”
“I had someone watching the building.”
“That is not reassuring.”
“It wasn't meant to be.”
I crossed my arms.
“What do you want?”
“To make sure you're safe.”
“I survived before meeting you.”
“Barely.”
His answer irritated me.
Then he handed me a small envelope.
Inside was Noah’s medication, along with enough money to cover several months of treatment.
My throat tightened.
“I can't accept this.”
“You already did.”
I stared at him.
“You’re impossible.”
“So I've been told.”
Before I could respond, a car sped past the building.
Lorenzo’s expression instantly changed.
He grabbed my arm and pulled me behind him.
The car disappeared around the corner.
Two of his men rushed forward.
“What happened?” I whispered.
Lorenzo stared down the street.
“Someone wants you frightened.”
“Because of the ballroom?”
“Because you stood beside my mother.”
My stomach tightened.
“I didn't do anything wrong.”
“I know.”
May you like
His gaze softened.
“That is exactly why I'm worried.”
