Chapter 73 - THE BROKEN PIANO

The attic library contained an old piano.
It had belonged to Elena.
The keys were cracked.
The finish was faded.
Nobody had touched it in years.
One afternoon, Lily found Emma staring at it.
“Can it still play?”
“I don't know.”
Lily sat down.
She pressed one key.
A soft note filled the room.
Emma smiled.
“Apparently.”
Lily played another.
Then another.
Soon, a simple melody drifted through the attic.
Children gathered around the doorway.
Mara smiled.
Noah's daughter sat on the floor listening.
Emma closed her eyes.
For a moment, she imagined Elena sitting nearby.
Not as she had been in her final years.
But young.
Strong.
Laughing.
Lily finished the song.
“Did Grandma Elena play?”
Emma nodded.
“Sometimes.”
“Was she good?”
Emma laughed.
“Not particularly.”
Lily grinned.
“So I play better?”
“Much better.”
Lorenzo appeared at the doorway.
“She was terrible.”
Emma turned.
“You're still brave enough to say that?”
“She can't punish me anymore.”
Everyone laughed.
The piano became part of the house.
Every Friday evening, children gathered to play music.

And something broken became beautiful again.
