Chapter 10 - THE FINAL CHOICE

Federal investigators arrived the next morning.

Daniel handed them the evidence.

Senator Whitmore was arrested before sunset.

His wife tried to deny everything until the recording was played.

The ballroom scandal that had begun with an elderly woman being humiliated ended with an entire political network collapsing.

But one decision remained.

Lorenzo found me outside the garden.

“You can leave now.”

I looked at him.

“Is that what you want?”

“No.”

His honesty stopped me.

“I want you to stay.”

“Because you need protecting?”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“Because when everyone else looked away, you looked at my mother.”

I smiled faintly.

“She reminded me of my grandmother.”

“I know.”

“You investigated me?”

“Yes.”

I laughed.

“You really are impossible.”

“I know.”

He reached for my hand carefully, giving me every chance to pull away.

I didn't.

Behind us, Elena watched from the window with a knowing smile.

Noah ran across the garden.

“Emma!”

I turned.

He held up his new inhaler.

“My breathing is better!”

Tears filled my eyes.

Lorenzo squeezed my hand.

For the first time, I understood that one act of kindness had changed all our lives.

I had stepped between a frightened old woman and cruelty.

And somehow, that single step had led me home.
