Chapter 6 - THE LAWYER’S PHONE CALL

The next morning, a lawyer named Daniel Reed arrived at my apartment.
He placed a thick folder on my kitchen table.
“Lorenzo asked me to explain something before you make any decisions.”
I opened the folder.
Inside were photographs, financial records, and names I recognized from television.
Senator Whitmore.
Several construction companies.
A private security firm.
Daniel pointed to one document.
“Someone has been moving illegal money through charity foundations connected to the senator.”
I stared at him.
“What does this have to do with me?”
“You witnessed the senator’s wife causing a public incident. More importantly, your intervention created witnesses.”
“Witnesses to what?”
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“The senator’s wife spilled wine deliberately.”
I frowned.
“But why?”
“Because Elena Moretti had discovered something.”
A chill ran through me.
“What?”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“She knew the senator was stealing millions from a city redevelopment fund.”
Suddenly, the entire ballroom made sense.
The shouting.
The humiliation.
The deliberate distraction.
Elena had not been an accidental target.
May you like
She had been targeted because she knew too much.
And I had accidentally become the one person who stood beside her when everyone else looked away.
