Years later, Ava moved to another state to direct a family shelter.
Before leaving, she gave Emma a letter.
“I want you to read it when I'm gone.”
Emma opened it that night.
“Emma,
You once told me I didn't have to thank you.
I didn't understand.
I thought gratitude meant repaying a debt.
Now I know better.
You didn't save me so I could belong to you.
You helped me until I could stand on my own.
Then you let me walk forward.
That is what real kindness is.
I used to think my life was defined by what happened to me.
Now I know it is defined by what I choose to do with what happened.
I'm going to help other girls the way you helped me.
Not because I owe you.
Because I learned from you.
Thank you for opening the door.
I'll spend the rest of my life opening it for someone else.”
Emma cried silently.
Lorenzo sat beside her.
“She's going to be extraordinary.”
