Chapter 21 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED
Three years after the wedding, Emma believed the hardest days of her life were behind her.
Then Elena collapsed.
It happened during a charity dinner at the same ballroom where they had first met.
One moment Elena was laughing with guests.
The next, her glass slipped from her hand.
“Mom!”
Lorenzo caught her before she hit the floor.
Emma rushed to them.
Elena was conscious, but her face had gone frighteningly pale.
“Call an ambulance!”
Within minutes, the ballroom transformed into chaos.
Lorenzo held his mother’s hand all the way to the hospital.
Emma stood beside him.
Doctors eventually explained that Elena needed urgent surgery.
Lorenzo sat outside the operating room, staring at the floor.
Emma sat beside him.
“You're not alone.”
“I thought I had already lost everything once.”
“You haven't lost her.”
He looked at her.
“What if this time I do?”
Emma took his face gently between her hands.
“Then we'll face it together.”
Hours later, the surgeon emerged.
The operation had succeeded.
Elena was alive.
Lorenzo closed his eyes and finally allowed himself to cry.
Emma wrapped her arms around him.
The feared Mafia king disappeared in that hallway.
